Yesterday when I dropped my son off at his hockey practice I had to head over to Sport Check and pick up a new water bottle for him. One of the cashier stations was closed so needless to say the one that was open had quite a line-up. I wasn't in a big hurry so even though I was making a tiny purchase I had no issues waiting in line. As I got closer to the front of the line, I could hear the young girl behind the cash register making conversation with the customers. Not your normal small talk about the weather, but actually chatting away like they were old friends. The customer right in front of me had 2 small children. 2 small BUSY children who had been trying to run off every chance they could get while Mom was in line. The cashier engaged the kids in the conversation too! Asking them questions about the purchases and what they would use them for. Really working hard to involve them. I know that Mom must have appreciated the efforts. And this young girl was NICE! Super happy and upbeat, and not in a superficial way at all. You could tell this was who she was. She genuinely liked people, meeting them and loving her work. When it was my turn she pointed out my shirt and we started a great conversation about her Father and my Husband being die hard Red Wings fans and how neither one of us could tell you anything about the team despite their influence on us (HAHA, sorry to any hockey and/or Red Wings fans out there!)
I never expected to go into Sport Check and chat away about my husband's devotion to his favorite hockey team. In fact, I didn't expect to have any conversations at all! Most of the time when you are in a retail store these days people might say hi, ask you a few questions like how would you like to pay and then quickly send you on your way so they can serve the next customer. And online purchases?! I think people do that so they don't have to see people at all!!
As I walked away I thought that this girl is going to go a long way in the sales and service industry. And that her boss should promote her or at least give her a raise! Her outlook and demeanor was a positive reflection on the store and the experience and would likely bring customers back in. I can almost bet that every customer wasn't at all upset about the long line up because this young girl made it worth their time standing in line just by being pleasant to deal with.
And then I was reminded of YOU! I was reminded of you because delivering the best in customer satisfaction and building an exceptional customer experience is what will help you grow your business!! It is one of 4 keys to building a solid foundation for business success that I teach in the online program Grow your Business and I want that success for you.
There are so many ways you can set yourself apart as a business professional by going the extra mile. Showing people that you genuinely care about them. When you remember little things about them, they will remember you. AND they will tell others about you. Hiding behind your computer is not the way to deliver 100% customer satisfaction. You have to break free from the online and send a hand written note, put in place a referral program or spend an extra few minutes prior to a treatment genuinely listening to people. Be just like this girl in Sport Check and make a connection with each person you meet. They will be thinking about you after! Just like I have been thinking about this young girl.
